Friday April 11th – Puerto Penasco to Willard Bay.
![]() 12:00: 44km to go, wind at 13kts and building. Looks like dinner at Alfonsina’s tonight. Seas still flat making it one of the most comfortable crossings yet. It’s amazing how quickly the cruising pace sets in. Lots of lounging maybe due to the 4 AM wakeup. If fact I’m feeling a nap coming on 🙂 2:30: Engine off spinnaker up and we’re making 7kts in a 15kt breeze. Seas still less than 2ft. Looking to be one of our best crossings yet. Hearts cards games going strong. . . 5:30: Spinnaker down with wind backing to 12. Anchor down in front of Alfonsina’s at 6:30. 97km in 14 hours, smokin at 7kts average speed. Time for dinner.. Friday night and there’s a big crowd at the restaurant. Lot’s of locals and two small sports fishing boats anchored near the beach. Talked to the house that has the open wireless. They want get a cruising sailboat sometime soon. They’re glad to provide the free internet access for us.. .. 4:00 AM Saturday morning. Wind gusting to 30 and our anchor is draging. Crew up at 4 AM again!! Pulling up anchor it’s covered with green slim in a ball about 3′ round. Not much holding in that. Wind out of the north so we motored up close to the sand spit above Alfonsina’s and tried another set. Looks like we have a good hold.. Back in the bunks for some more rest. 7:30: Anchor held! Now wind is gusting to 35. Looks like we may be here a while. Not so bad with a restaurant and internet access while we’re waiting it out. A kite sailing braves the wind and comes out and gives us a show for breakfast with Alfonsina’s in the background. Plan… We’re going to set on this anchorage until we get a good read on what the weather is doing… Lowell for the Gato Loco Crew.
