Leg 1 Cruise South

Leg 1 departs Sunday April 21st weather permitting for the 12 day cruise to Baja and the 2013 edition of Loreto Fest. Leg 1 crew Jeffery & Lynnie Altfillisch (left & top in photo above left, with Kim) got a chance to experience sailing on Gato Loco before we depart and will be a great crew. They’re serious fishermen with lots of experience boating out of the Cholla area. This will  be their first sailing experience and they are very excited about the cruise. Craig Roper, another Cholla sailor, will join us making a crew of 4 on the leg that gets to experience both northern and central Sea of Cortez Baja coast. Craig is currently travelling and will return to Cholla just in time to sail south. Interesting enough, Craig, his wife and friends drove Baja enjoying the Sea of Cortez coast down to Loreto this spring. He will now see the coast from a sailing view.

Crews

This years legs will have a full boat with lots of newbies on board. Leg 1 is the Cholla crew. Leg 2 is the owners crew. Leg 3 is loaded with 4 newbie card sharks joining Bill and Carol. Leg 5 is the Cholla HOOD crew. Rick is bringing along friends on leg 5. Leg 7 will be the cinco amigos cruise. That brings me to Leg 8 which at the moment only has Doug and I after the Rangel family had to drop out. If you’re interested in Leg 8 drop me an email lowell-mcculley@cox.net

Cruise Prep

Recent weeks it’s been all about boat maintenance. As you can see above our power winch had to be repaired and lubed. New parts from Harken successfully brought the winch back online. We just completed pulling the port engine and replacing the lower crank main seal and rebuilding the lower unit. I’ve made lots of canvas repair and Bill is having the main sail cover rebuilt plus new vinyl windows.  Bill is working to get the front crossbar repainted and removing the front tramps for some re-stitching. Finally, a wax job and the bottom cleaning and we should be ready to head out.

We have to give Victor Rangel a hug thank you for donating the dinghy outboard motor to Gato Loco. We’ve borrowed it the past 2 years. Thank you Victor.. Sorry you can’t join us on leg 8.

Above, Doug and I pose with what looks like a miniature Gato Loco with a Baja backdrop during leg 1, 2012.

Riding the Waves to Loreto (By Craig Reay)    right click here to download Craig’s song

We’re riding the waves to Loreto
Wind blowing what’s left of our hair
We’re sailing with good companeros
I hope we’ll be seeing ya there.

We’ll soon be in Puerto Escondido folder
With sailors from far and from near,
We’ll swap tales and curse the mosquitos
We’ll laugh and we’ll drown in our beer.

Hope the wind will be fair in Loreto,
We’ll bask in the dawn’s early light,
Then just like sombrero’d bandidos,
We’ll be off like thieves in the night.

We’re riding the waves to Loreto
We’re brash and we’re “devil may care”
We may move a bit des-pac-ito.
(But) we do it with bravado and flair.

We’ll soon be in Puerto Escondido
Providing the weather is clear,
With ole salts and weathered amigos
We’ll toast to another good year.

Hope the wind will be fair in Loreto,
We’ll bask in the dawn’s early light,
Then we’ll leave you with fond despedidos
And set sail like a seagull in flight…

Just like those fabled bandidos…
We’ll be off like thieves in the night.

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into
any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement?
My blog has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either written myself
or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up
all over the web without my authorization. Do you know any methods to help prevent content from being ripped off?
    I’d really appreciate it.
