Seawind Rally braves winds and Escapes to Isla Carmen
Tuesday AM… Instruments say it all. 25kt winds gusting to 30, on the lee of Isla Carmen with small seas and jamming at 7.4kts towards Bahia Salinas on the NE corner of Carmen. Rally boats trickled out of Escondido as they completed provisioning which was a little more practical today. Gato Loco lead the way finding winds a bit shifty as they came over Carmen’s mountains moving up the coast. Arriving at Salinas there’s a steady 18kts blowing over the salt ponds as we set the anchor in turquoise water in 12’ and nice sand bottom. Winds are forecasted to diminish tonight but just in case I jumped in and swam to the anchor to be sure we had a nice bit. The anchor was like a happy little clam buried nicely in the sand. As boats arrived one by one, we were happy to see that we all made it out of Puerto Escondido and all having their stories of wind as the rounded the south end of Carmenm and headed north. The Rally is now…
Ralph & Helen on MoonDrifter (1160)
Steve & Pam on Barramundi (1000)
Larry & Nancy on Island Time (1000)
Guy & Carol on Stray Cat (1000)
Bruce, Tina & Devin on Cat Can Do (1000) the 1st Cat Can Do that was salvaged after Hurricane John
Lowell, Bill & Carol on Gato Loco (1000)
Carol & Clare on Paradox (Cantana 38)
Our Phoenix sailing friends on a Moorings 443
Interesting note.. Bill, Frankie and I have sailed Cat Can Do but it was the replacement boat (#2). The 1st was pilled in Marina de La Paz and totaled by the insurance co.. Bruce bought her for pennies and recovered her to sailing conditions. I’ll try to get some pictures of what he had to do.. His recovery story very interesting.
The party tonight is on MoonDrifter. There’s 16 of us enjoying our first cool beautiful evening together.
Steve & Clare brought their guitars as well as other instruments. Food, Music, tall stories and good and new friends. Life is good on the Sea of Cortez.

Wednesday (Bill’s Birthday) Winds dropped to zero overnight, our first quiet night in 4 days. Beautiful sunny morning and 72. Nice.
Carol was up early for this colorful sunrise over the NE end of Carmen
We’re off to tour the salt mine with Ralliers. Kurt wanted a window picture of the Seawinds anchored. This from the office near the pier.
I won’t be typing the next blog on the office computer..! It’s seen it’s better days.
Pam, our Seawind nurse, checks in at the Medical office along with Steve, Nancy and Larry.

The Gato Loco crew poses at the salt ponds.
We’re told the water temp is about 10 degrees cooler than normal but it is definitely swimmable so it’s time to stop and get Wrecked at the Reef (our local Penasco bar) just 1/4 mile from our anchorage.
OOO LAA LAA >
If this isn’t a Wrecked at the Reef poster I’m not sure what one would look like. Photo by Bill
Water feels great and the east sun has all the colors and fish a glow. Gato Loco even got a little hull cleaning..
Cat Can Do’s dog stands guard while we swim the wreck.
Steve taking a closer look.
Anchor up 11ish and the rally is off to Isla Coronados.
Birthday boy resting up for the big party tonight.
Awesome afternoon.. As we past the sea lion colony in the NE Carmen point winds up at 15 at our back.. Stray Cat, Paradox and of course Gato Loco flew our colors heading for Isla Coronados.
And that brings us to the birthday party. Bill started the evening by getting to talk to his mother before the party guest began to arrive. Perfect evening, cool breeze from the south with 16 boats in the north Coronados anchorage. A few clouds to add a little color to evening sky.
Our Seawind friends help us decorate for the festivities. Nancy on Island time brings her cloths line with balloons. Margs are flowing and Bill is having a great evening. Steve has the guitar going and we sang happy birthday at least 3 times. I think we were a little noisy in the anchorage but what can I say, Bill only turn SSIIXXTTYY once.
Final tequila shot of the night.. Happy birthday my friend.
We’re heading south to a Baja anchorage, Agua Verde tomorrow night to say farewell to boats heading south to La Paz. It will be weenie roast night which won’t be the same without Kurt and Laurie.
Until the next update
