San Juanico – Playa El Burro (Seawind Rally continues)
Tuesday May 4th
Punta Pulipto, Baja version of Aires Rock, was suppose to pass to port as we sailed to Bahia Conception 58 miles north…BUT… The radio cracked “these seas are big and we have 20 kts on our nose”. The winds and seas were expected to lay down Monday night. Setting in the well protected San Juanico we couldn’t tell. Ralph and Helen on Moondrifter headed out first and soon decided they didn’t want to beat north in these seas and radioed they were pulling into the Pulpito anchorage. Soon after we hear Kurt’s voice saying he’s with Ralph. Another group decision.. Let’s only make 8 miles today and wait out the north winds at Punta Pulpito..
.
.
Before we head in Bob goes to work and catches two nice size bonitos and we will have them for dinner.
.
Time to get everything well secured. The southern Punta Pulpito anchorage has good protection but the large rock mass at the point tends to accelerate the winds through the anchorage.

This anchorage use to have a nice sand beach but recent hurricanes have stripped all the sand from the beach. Now there’s only large rock (1 – 3′) making it a challenge to land a dinghy. The bottom is still sand for good anchor holding. Neely and I slip ashore by landing on an exposed reef on the west side of the anchorage.
.
Kurt’s wife Laurie was under the weather the past days and emerged today felling much better. Kurt and her are off to explore the rock arch on the east side of the point. They found large swells still running making it a challenge to dinghy through the arch.

Today’s Terry birthday on Razzel Dazzel. We had hoped to be at Bertha’s in Playa El Burro but this is a great place to share his birthday. Gato Loco presented him with a perfect Mexico present, a 6 pack of Tecate including limes since he was running a bit low on cervesa.

.
.
.
We were all treated to special evening with cake and thanks to Ralph & Helen ICE CREAM.
.
.
Zac and mom Lisa, from Tenacious Grace, enjoyed the anchorage with hike to the top of Pulpito and visited the vain of black obsidian to collect some cool black rocks.
.

.
Frankie and Helen show off their birthday deserts.
.

.
.
By sunset winds winds have settled and we hope the seas will settle overnight.

Wednesday May 5th
Great night for sleeping with a calm anchorage and cool breeze. We’re up early to head north the 48 miles north to Conception Bay and on to Playa El Burro.
.
Winds are light as we head north and seas have finally settled down making it a pleasant motor north. By 11 the winds are 10 kts from the SE at our back and sails give us a good push.

.
.
.
.
Just like our passage south, we got a great sail as we rounded Punta Conception with winds at 15 kts.
.
.
Life on board pretty relaxed in the salon / library.
.
.
John and Regina on Dream Catcher head to Bertha’s on Playa El Burro.
.
After the long passage it’s always nice to have a good cold drink waiting. Bob orders up some great margaritas.

The evening started with fresh yellowtail sashimi on Sylvester thanks to their friends that crossed from San Carlos on a power cat and stopped in the middle to catch the yellowtail.
<<Evening dinner with the Rally group. We took our dinner orders in early and arrived at 8 pm and got severed a great dinner. Kurt and I hitched a ride earlier as the restaurant made a run for supplies for our dinner. We went 1/2 mile south to Bertha’s small store for supplies.
.
Thursday morning May 6th
Photos of El Burro cove as we ready to head to Isla San Marco. Sylvester with Kurt and Laurie crewing for Rob and Char head south to La Paz today. We’re now Moondrifter, Tenacious Grace, Dream Catcher and Gato Loco making the complete Rally route.
