Punta Chivato to Mulege (Leg 2 Day 3)

Hola from Mulege

Our south anchorage of San Marcos has great protection but is a little buggie. They’re out early this morning so we motored away early on glassy seas towards Punta Chivato. It’s much warmer today and arriving at Chivato we hit the water before heading in to the resort. Neely was SO READY to swim and doesn’t want to get out. We put her on the boat and she jumps right back in..

.

Our lucky day, the Punta Chivato resort is open for lunch. After looking around a bit we settle in for drinks and appetizers. We’re the only guests at the moment. They cater to groups IMG 7590this time of year and Europeans in the summer and have to close during hurricane season.

.

The resort is in great shape and a good place for a photo op..

IMG 7568Bill is quick to pose and check out the lounge design to add to his patio. Nice way to introduce Victor & Leslie to Baja. The staff doesn’t want us to leave but Mulege is our next stop for the evening and we have a hankering for Mulege Margaritas as our friend Mike calls them..

Winds are up out of the east as we head south for the 10 mile sail to Mulege.

.

.

Tides are good for our passage into the inner harbor but we still get the 5ft, 4ft, 3.5ft call IMG 7599out as we pass over the shoal just as we make the lighthouse mountain on the north side of the channel. We’ve only touched the sand bottom once on a low tide exit on previous visits. Army guards now posted on the sea wall below the lighthouse greet us with waves as we set the anchor in 5ft of water in front of the north boat ramp.

Mulege has a mix of American sport fishing and a large fleet of pangas. In the photo below, fishermen pull yellowtail, sierra & a few other variety of fish out of their nets and load them into refrigerator trucks. Dorado aren’t in the area yet.

We decide to walk the north shore of the river into Mulege 4km up river.

How would you like to go fishing in the smiling panga.

.

.

Okay maybe 4km is a little to far on a warm afternoon so we stopped by a fishing camp and arranged a ride in a IMG 7603rickety old Nissan truck. Hey it’s cool riding in the back but we’re worried about Leslie launching over the back..

The dive shop is open and Bill bought a lure that IMG 7605had been working in the past days. Maybe there’s hope.

.

The the riverfront is looking good but the Malecon improvements don’t seem to have made much progress. While the girls finish shopping Bill, Neely and I find the local watering hole for some Mulege Margaritas. Talking IMG 7611to some Americans who have a house on the river we find that they’ve been flooded out twice in the past 6 years from hurricanes. It takes lots of stamina to live on the river but they seem to bounce back quickly.

Clear skies and warm weather at sunset as we walk to El Patron restaurant for dinner.

Didn’t get to see the Mission or Prison but another good Mulege visit.

Hi Lowell, Frankie, Bill & Neely.
I’ve just received your latest blog after putting Kerry on the plane this morning. It was hard not to change my mind & come with her – I’m suffering huge envy. Keep on having lots of fun – this year I’ll just have to be content to take my Baja hit this year vicariously. Best wishes to you all.
