Baja09 Leg2 off to Great Start

By Lowell | April 19, 2009 | Category Baja 09

Spread the love

9 AM Sunday morning, wind out of the NW at 8-10, seas 2′, making 7+ motorsailing, 46kms remain of the 72 to cross to Santa Rosalia. Strategy is to get as far across as we can before the afternoon winds build. Bill’s experience this past week has been serious winds in the afternoon (usually 30+).

Adios Amigos… Bruce, Cynthia & Clyde (They took the red-eye bus back to Penasco Sat night)

Leg 2 actually started Saturday morning for Victor & Leslie driving from Phoenix toIMG 7381 San Carlos in 7 1/2 hours and Lowell & Frankie driving from Cholla in 7 hours. Gato Loco arrived at Marina Real 1ish and crew was relaxing in a slip as we arrived. As you might expect stories began flying of adventures on Leg 1. Looking back, they had a great sail even though it was very windy and to cool to swim and enjoy the underwater world. Early morning departure from Cholla>>>

IMG 7412 Okay, Now we have bone to pick with the leg 1 crew. They seemed to have filled up the poop tank and broke the poop pump 🙂 Their poor skipper had to climb into the bilge to replace the pump and some hoses with stuff flinging everywhere while we crossed today 🙁 Get the picture. All’s well that ends well as we left a brown stream trailing Gato Loco in the center of the Sea with a working poop pump…

On to cleaner topics… 12 noon, 12kts wind, 7.5kts boat speed, warm breeze in our face and 26kms remaning. We look to make Santa Rosalial 4ish.. A perfect crossing so far.

New technolgy on board. We have a Telcel 3G wireless card in the Gato Loco computer that allows us to connect to the internet and send mail at a muchCapture higher speed and less costly. We are 15 miles off Santa Rosalia and can surf the internet. Life is good for me (Lowell) & Leslie.

4 PM sails down as we enter Santa Rosalia horbor after 3 hours of motor free sailing in 18-20kts winds on our beam. 72kms in 11 hours with comfortable seas… Sorry Leg 1 crew..

    Crew 2 is looking GOOD.
Either the Sun really agrees with Bill .. or .. he has been working on the poop-pump again!
Congrats to Victor for the “first” fish … I’m betting he catches the most out of ALL the groups.
    CAREFUL with those “Mulege” Margs.
