Mazatlán boat prep
The trip began with a massive storm sweeping through the Midwest, and—of course—Chris’s flight out of Minneapolis was canceled. He scrambled to find another flight and managed to join us in Phoenix just in time for our flight to Mazatlán. The flight from Phoenix was uneventful, and by mid-afternoon, we were aboard Strikhedonia.
Let me take a moment to explain the name Strikhedonia. It’s a modern, likely invented term that captures the pleasure of being able to say, “To hell with it.” More specifically, it describes the liberating feeling of letting go of consequences and abandoning your worries. With that spirit in mind, we’ll be off—heading south along the coast of Mexico. Honestly, Strikhedonia sounds like the title of a song. More on that later.

Strikhedonia is a Seawind 1160, the bigger sister to Gato Loco, a Seawind 1000. Her accommodations are sweet, and she’s well outfitted for both coastal cruising and open-ocean sailing. Paul and I are thrilled to be joining this leg of Chris’s sailing season, especially with the promise of mostly downwind sailing.
Chris has plans for some upgrades while we’re in Mazatlán, where quality work is readily available. As we arrived, the final wash and bottom cleaning were just wrapping up, and Chris was busy re-rigging gear that had been stowed away over the Christmas break. One major project—installing canvas covers over all the exterior windows—will take a couple of days, so it looks like we’ll be setting sail south on Thursday.

While Chris tackled the boat work, Paul and I hopped on a bus to explore central Mazatlán. The city boasts a long, scenic oceanfront malecón—perfect for a long walk. Eventually, we flagged down a little open-air taxi to take us to the central market. We’re not big shoppers, but it’s a historic spot worth seeing.

The day wrapped up with a lovely dinner alongside fellow cruisers: Marga from Dogfish, and Jody and Kirby from Lodos. A great start to the cruising chapter of our journey.

Until the next update
