Los Loco Loiterers – Day 4
May 13th
Today the story is of the Big One that got away. Our overnight in the Ballandra anchorage was cool and calm. Lots of yuck yucks, music on the bow and big juicy hamburgers for dinner. Supplies are running low for Ice and booze so we’re heading to Loreto for a quick stop to reenforce supplies. The crossing to Loreto for our anchorage is a couple of hours and we’re motoring waiting for the wind to build when zing goes the port fishing pole. Line is flying off the reel. We stop the boat and Scott’s trying to slow the reel runout. Finally, he has it under control and makes a little progress to reel in a little line that is near the end of the spool. It’s huge he keeps shouting. A little more progress on reeling in then the fish parks and refuses to budge. It’s a standoff and Scott is all fired up. Them the monster decides he’s had enough and gives a huge tug on the line bang bang the line goes limp and the fish is gone, and we have disappointed fishermen. We all lament we couldn’t deal with a huge catch anyway, but he took no comfort in our support. Reeling the line in he found the lure knot came loose. And that’s the highlight of the crossing to Loreto.
Supplies fetched and a margarita at the restaurant on the dock and we’re off to anchor in front of Loreto Bay resort tonight and for dinner on shore. Cruising to our anchorage in shallower water Scott catches 3 more small fish that he releases. This softens the pain of the Big lose. Nice dinner on shore and fun time the waiter staff. The anchorage was calm with a nice westerly breeze through the night.
May 14th
We’re off to Isla Monserrate with light wind and motors on. Passing the Danzonete channel winds fill in and we’re motor sailing with the bow pointed to the Bahia Agua Vere 18 miles south. Considering the wind now with motors off and potential bugs in the Monserrate we change plans to enjoy an afternoon of sailing on to the Agua Verde anchorage. Winds build to 20 in a direction that we need to put one tack in the make the Agua Verde entrance. The final leg was frisky until we were shadowed by the anchorage mountains. The bay where we held the Rally parties is empty and we take the center in 8 ft of water. Shortly 2 power boats join us, one a vintage trawler and their having problems with their anchor. Scott and Roger go help and find a nice senior couple dealing with a broken anchor windless. Charles returns the favor and brings 2 beer to Gato Loco and stays and sings in Roger evening serenade. We’re now good friends with Charles and Carol and the join us for dinner at the far west beach restaurant.
Ma 15th
Very windy overnight and we up using the anchor alarm to make sure we don’t drag anchor. No problem as usual with our Rocna anchor. We’re off early back to the marina Puerto Escondido 24 miles north while we have this wind. This is our best day sailing with a broad reach, motors off and doing 7kts. As we leave the anchorage dolphins appear and one jumps 8’ right in front of the boat. Scott captured it in video (See the Instagram video day 4). We’ll be in the marina early at this pace but wait we’ve got a fish on. This is always challenging when were under sail with strong winds. De-powering the sails and pointing toward the wind the good size Bonito is reeled in and released. Back up to speed and both reels start the zing. Now Scott and Roger are both working to bring lines in while I control speed. Two good size Bonito’s are released and away we go again. At this pace we will make the marina as planned. What an awesome morning. We make it to the marina 3ish and begin to prepare for the crew change tomorrow. First to the fuel dock for gas and water. They are now charging 5 pesos per litter for water I guess to slow down the water use in this growing marina. The crew is enjoying the marina and it beautiful setting. It’s they’re first time here. The hot shower and great restaurant help. Roger does another serenade on the slip with neighbor boats joining us before heading to our final dinner with the Los Loco Loiterers.
What a great time with this crew. So much fun and we’ll have to “do it all over again” in two weeks at Roger’s music festival in Puerto Penasco. They fly out tomorrow and Paul, Kate and Doug fly in. Another leg of this fun season coming to a close.
