Gato Loco Leg 2–The boys Cruise part1
Thursday May 9th
The new crew is settled in and provisions done. We’re all set to spend another night in the marina but we decided to escape to Algodones Bay and anchor in front of the Soggy Peso beach bar. There’s a band playing and they’re pretty busy. Louis, the waiter that gave us a ride back to the boat last night, is taking very good care of us. It’s an early night for us with our 83 Nm crossing to Santa Rosalia tomorrow.
Friday May 10th
Winds blew all night which is never good. This morning we’re up at 5:30. Weather looks sketchy but internet weather (Windy) looks promising that if we can make it to the center of the Sea of Cortez things will lighten up and settle. WELL it was another one of those mornings where thoughts of turning back to our safe anchorage resonate in your head as we find a nice 15-18kt reaching breeze but the seas are rolling at 7? and we have waves crashing over the cabin occasionally. The morning was spent enduring and looking ahead for calmer seas. Windy was right and things lighten up about half way across. We’re now enjoying just rewards with the last 15 miles having flat seas, wind at our back, motors off and tunes cranked. What a day… Santa Rosalia here we come.
The crew enjoying the last 15 miles into the Santa Rosalia Marina.
Santa Rosalia
Dinner at our favorite Tonka Grill. It’s Mexico’s Mother’s day and the restraint is totally full. Our Seawind sailing buddy Chris on Strickadonia joined us for good but late night dinner.
Saturday May 11th
We Introduced the boys to Santa Rosalia starting with the classic photo.
Provisions and some sightseeing then back to the marina for heading out to Punta Chivato 20 miles south.
We have sails up 10 minutes out of the the Santa Rosalia on a down wind run past the near by San Marcos island. Winds lighten as we head east to round Punta Chivato.
The palm lined beaches and homes of Punta Chivato.
This is Chris and Todd’s first anchorage with time to get the paddle boards out and cook dinner on board. These guys are all over the galley preparing dinner in short order.
I can’t believe this photo makes the blog. Yes, it’s warmer and we’ve been swimming.
Sunday May 12th (Happy Mothers Day)
We’re headed into Conception Bay to Playa Santispac
Just south of Punta Chivato we run into hug pod of big Bottlenose dolphin. (the video will do it more justice)
Another sail only day with good winds all the way into Santispac. We chased another big catamaran into the anchorage.
Santispac beach is a camping stop over for people driving HW 1 north and south. There’s new palapa for the campers this year and it’s pretty busy.
It’s a restaurant night for us. There’s two on the beach. Armando’s is open but they’re out of fish. Shrimp and scallops will do.
Nice evening with winds coming out of the north off the beach. The leg 2 crew is having a great time.
We’re headed to Mulege tomorrow and then south towards Loreto.
All good on Gato Loco
Until the next Update
The Leg 2 passage south to Puerto Escondido.
