Loreto Leg 7

By Lowell | June 2, 2008 | Category Baja 08

Spread the love
Mike, Heather, and Brian arose early Thursday morning in Cholla Bay and headed south to San Carlos at 5:30 AM. We arrived in San Carlos around 12:30, found our funky and colorful hotel . It didn’t take us long to make our way over to the Soggy Peso on Catch 22 beach for margaritas and crab tostados with our toes in the sand. It has begun!!! Roger and Carl pulled in around 10:30 while we played cards on the front porch swilling a few beers and shots. We flagged a station wagon taxi with some awesome mag wheeels to take us and all our gear to the airport. The flight was late, of course, so after check in, we grabbed a Squirt from the vending machine and headed to the parking lot for a quick shot of tequila before going through security. The plane ride was fantastic with amazing views of the San Carlos/Guaymas area and the Sea of Cortez. A quick 45 minutes later and we were landing in Loreto. After waiting for what seemed like hours for our taxi to leave the airport, we were finally in Loreto at La Damiana Inn. It only took about 15 minutes for the Gato Loco land crew to find us at the Inn. Bill, Lowell and Frankie pulled up in Pee Wee and we proceded to tour the Inn. This home was built in the 30’s for an Army Captain. It has many rooms with 10 ft. high ceilings and extra thick walls. The kitchen is an open air affair. After catching up on the cool local places to visit we headed to La Pa Lapa. This is a local restraunt that specializes in tacos especiales. Awesome beef tacos in a special sauce ( Mc Tacos?) combined with a HUGE Mr. Smiley Kool-Aid pitcher of margys and all was well! We finished off the day strolling the friendly, clean streets of Loreto. This is a city of great civic pride.IMG 0601

Saturday was shopping and provisioning day for the boat. Heather, Bill,Frankie and Lowell went in Pee wee to find food for 8 days and Mike, Roger and Carl strolled through town. Of course they were found at La Pa Lapa again! Brian just kicked back at the Inn.

Finally!!!! We are on Gato Loco. Off we go on a two hour motor to Candeleros South which will be anchorage for the night. A nice little bay with just enough room for one boat at anchor. The bay quickly turned into Bee Cove as 100’s of bees and wasps came aboard. Obviously there is no bee shortage in Mexico!!! They were bad enough that we pulled anchor early the next morning and headed on out. The bummer of the day was Alisa’s flight was delayed and she had to spend the night in Hermosillo while we stayed anchored in Loreto, waiting….We are hoping that she is on the 10:50 flight this morning!
