After two cool breezy days on the Pacific side we decided to head for the East Cape and warm up a little. Leaving Scorpion Bay we drove south to San Carlos near IMG 3099Bahia Magdalena the huge bay about half way down Baja on the Pacific side. This is where whales winter and have their calves creating a big tourist attraction. This time of year there’s no whales and the village was empty of tourist except us and there’s a reason. There’s not much to see here but whales. We did have a good experience staying the Alcatraze Hotel where they loved Neely and made us feel very welcome. Bill stayed in a nice room for $45 and we parked Pee Wee near by. Another cool day and evening so we made the decision to head to La Ventana on the East Cape.

IMG 3116Driving to La Ventana we headed south through La Paz yet one more time and then east over a beautiful mountain range covered with dense trees and cactus, La Paz’s version of the boulders in the Carefree Az area. The desert is white decomposed granite which extends to the beaches of La Ventana. The La Ventana area has low level beaches as well as high cliff vistas looking out at Isla Cerralvo which forms a windy channel that we’ve experienced sailing from Cabo to La Paz.IMG 3123

Arriving, our first stop was the Palapas Ventana. A very nice friendly place that was working hard to get ready for hurricane season. They were hit hard by hurricane John two IMG 3132 years ago and running heavy machinery during the day repairing things. We opted to stay at the La Ventana campground which is huge, clean and on the beach centrally located and a good restaurant in walking distance.

It turns out the La Ventana is IMG 3196an even bigger wind & Kite Surfing destination than Los Barriles. We stumbled in to Baja Joe’s where they have everything for teaching including cheap accommodations and excellent equipment. After talking to Joe we found the best and not so busy time to come for lessons would be the first of November. Water is still warm and winds are good. Maybe sometime soon 🙂

Tomorrow (Friday) we head north back to Loreto to meet up with the leg 7 crew. Brian, Heather, Mike, Roger & Carl started their journey to Loreto today driving to San Carlos tonight. They will be spending the night then flying to Loreto mid-day tomorrow. They are flying with a small airline that flies dual prop Cessnas. We all should meet up mid-afternoon with them and enjoy a Friday night in Loreto. Bill will be captain on their way back to San Carlos over the next week. Roger’s wife Alisa will be joining Gato Loco on Sunday night as they depart north.

We didn’t expect to hear from Gato Loco during this week since they had no phones on board to send updates. They should be writing updates and we will be sending them along when we join up with Gato Loco on Saturday.
