2018 Rally Update #1
Sunday May 20th
14 multihulls and one schooner gathered at Marina Puerto Escondido for the 2018 Rally around anchorages in the Loreto area. It all started with a meet and greet at the marina facility where our sponsor West Coast Multihulls is opening a new sailing charter office. This is the 10th annual Rally and has super sized compared to past Rallies that typically had 5 or 6 boats. Kurt Jerman the founder of WCM worked hard to make this a special event bring multihull sailors together for a week of sailing fellowship. The sad part of this story is that 2 weeks before the Rally Kurt found out he needed hip surgery that could not be postponed. SO, here we are having a great Rally that he organized with out him. We all wish him a speedy recovery to get him back on the water. You are seriously missed this year Kurt.
With Kurt absent for this year, Ralph and I were put in charge since we know the area very well and have made all 10 of the Rallies. The picture left Helen and Barb get Rally shirts ready for the everybody. Right is this years shirt design printed on a blue heather. The design also credits the other Rally sponsors Puerto Escondido Marine and Marina Puerto Escondido who gave the Rally 2 free nights at their brand new dock facility. Huge catered dinner at the marina started the event as we got to know new fellow sailors.
Monday May 21st
Yesterday the Gato Loco’s Rally crew arrived just in time for dinner. Frankie, Murril, Al and Murril’s buddy Rob all meet in San Diego and flew Aero Calafia out of Tijuana to Loreto.
Day one of sailing the fleet is heading to Bahia Salinas 20 miles on the north east side of Isla Carmen. Last week there was good winds sailing south to Loreto and unfortunately this weeks forecast is for light local winds. With fairly short sailing, many boats try to make it sailing but all but one ended up motoring to make the anchorage in good time.
Boats heading out of Marina Puerto Escondido with the beautiful mountain backdrop.
Al and Frankie take on the dousing sail duties with big smiles
Some photos of the Bahia Salinas. The anchorage is open to the SE and we have some swell rolling in though the night rocking us to sleep
Yeah, The salt flats are back this year so we made hike and I flew the drone . The hunting lodge is looking good. They bring hunters to the island to hunt bighorn sheep. Poor little guys.
Tuesday morning and the fleet is off to Isla Coronados
All good on Gato Loco
Until the next update
Great place eye am Jealous..Keep it up have fun

Best wishes to everyone at the 2018 Baja Rally from all of us at Seawind. It looks like a great start & I’m sure it will be a huge success. It is a big shame that Kurt couldn’t make but I’m sure he will enjoy his health being toasted with Baja margaritas.
I love the write-ups about your travels. I always wanted to sign up to travel 1 or 2 legs of your trips but unfortunately I was always busy. I am not busy now but at 86 I think I missed the boat so to speak. Always look forward to your pictures and stories. Thanks
