Monster Shrimp Cruise to Lobos
I love Mexican fisherman stories. Today a few miles off the village of Desemboque, a ponga approached with 4 pongarios (fisherman). We’re sailing at 6 kts while they pull along side us and show us big blue shrimp larger than we’ve ever seem. I toss them a bag with 200 pesos and they toss us 2 dozen shrimp. Dinner plans are set.
All in all a good day of sailing. Morning easterlies, afternoon westerly’s and a motor kicker, and we’re going to arrive in Lobos before 6.
The crew is enjoying a relaxing day, Ellen reading, Terry enjoy is music, Deb coloring (cool stuff, photos later), Dave doing maintenance and me doing what I do. Oh yes, Dave did cook up an excellent breakfast.
Fishing report, We can’t find our fishing reels and no body wanted to run hand lines so nothing to report. We’re going to see if we can acquire a reel in Lobos. We had heard that Victor Rangel was fishing in Lobos. After sending him a text message he gave us a lead on getting a reel on board. This turned into one of those special Mexico stories. Victor suggested we contact Tom Alber who runs https://fishinginlobos.com/ a fishing charter operation out of Lobos. I’ve actually meet Tom with Jeffrey years past. After anchoring in the south bay we motored in and meet 4 Prescott fishermen enjoying Toms operation this weekend. Of course I had to catch up on Prescott with them and then Tom took us to his boat yard, the heart of his operation. He soon surfaced from one of the boats and handed us 3 fishing reels. The story gets better. He says “Here they are and when your finished just return them to me”. I said “is a couple of months okay”. Sure no problem… Don’t you love it. We’re back in the fishing business. Thank you Tom and Victor.
Sunsets in Puerto Lobos are always awesome with the lighthouse and homes to the west of our anchorage.
Oh did I mention the monster shrimp. Dave marinated them in garlic, beer & olive oil and grilled them with shell on and they were almost like lobster.
Finally here’s a video of our final preparation and departure were I say my final (but not final) goodbye to Dave and Kelley moving to Belize and celebrate Bill birthday. Happy birthday Bill.
Until the next update
We’ll be out of internet service for a couple of days. Heading to Puerto Refugio, Ilsa Tiburone and then on to Kino Bay where we will have service again (Tuesday). Talk soon.
