East Cape Update (May 19th – 20th)
Hello from Los Barriles on the east cape of Baja in game fishing country and the kite surfing capital of Baja. This is where serious fisherman hang out in search of the big fish (marlin, Sailfish…). We drove over the mountains from La Paz to Los Barriles mid-day Monday finding 4 RV park options finally landing in East Cape RV Resort. As usual things are very casual. The owner will be back tomorrow morning so take any spot. The place is like a lush park and empty for the summer making it hard to decide which garden spot to park Pee Wee in. Time for a walk and we soon understand why all the properties have cattle crossing at their entries. We watched this caw rip trash bags out of the can and tear it apart more like a dog than a caw. They seem to be everywhere. Sea side, there are fishing boats anchored offshore. There must be a water taxi service to get the fishing crews out. Houses on the beach seem to be very nice American homes. Huge rock walls protect them from the seas although there is 100 meters between the houses and the current tide line… Dinner turned out to be easy with a busy restaurant just across from our RV park. Seven seas soup & fish taco with fresh tortillas. . . . Weather is warmer and the AC is running as we retire for the night because winds have died. .
. Tuesday… A final Photo of the RV park and we’re off to Cabo Pulmo a Mexican National Marine park 100kms south. . . . _____________________________ Cabo Pulmo ______________________________
. Approaching Cabo Pulmo, we crossed the Tropic of Cancer a few miles north but the desert is stil pretty barrin. First we decided to try camping on the beach south of town which means another 4 miles on the gravel road and a mile in on sandy roads to the beach. On the way to the beach we passed this heard hanging under the shade tree hiding from the afternoon heat. Cattle are a real part of Baja life. . Great beach with palapas but soft sand stood between us and any good parking/camping spot so we decided not to risk it and headed back to Cabo Pulmo. . . . . . . Good plan to head back into town. Lots of areas to explore. Bill recommended Baja Bungalows but we The shore here is small stone that creates a loud tumble sound with each breaking wave. Surf is also breaking 200 meters off shore where a reef must be.. . . Pangas for dive & snorkel boat trips are pulled up above surf lines stranded until the swell is gone. The marine park doesn’t allow anchoring to protect the sea floor so they have no choice but set on the beach. . . Our casita had a mosquito net over the bed and we soon understood why retiring in bed for protection. They didn’t seem to bother Neely. . . Sunset at the restaurant looking out at the evening surf on the Sea of Cortez. Catch of the day Dorado. Wednesday morning started with a morning walk on the beach and then breakfast at El Rancho de Caballero. The restaurant decor was inspirational giving us ideas on how to make some changes in Cholla. The food was excellent as well as the music with Mexican group Mana playing in the kitchen. Today we’re off for Cabo and the west cape 11ish. Running late as usual. No word from Gato Loco. I hope the crew was having too much fun to send and update before sailing out of cell range on day two. Since they missed that opportunity we won’t hear from them until they reach the Loreto area probably on Friday. I had a little problem posting our last updates so if you couldn’t find anything new it was my problem not yours. Scroll on down and read our La Paz catch-up update.
