Rally Days–Where the wind blows us. (Final update)
Thursday May 25th
Before departing our windy La Lancha anchorage a panga slipped in with his throw net and a photographer capturing the moment. We slipped out in the dinghy to explore the cliff walls west of our hook and got a special treat when a small pad of dolphins joined us for a few minutes. Unbelievable they gave us a double dolphin jump that we missed with the camera. We shot some video but our memories are much better than the video unfortunately.
Winds out of the south blew all night and lightened up for us in the morning as we head west to Isla Coronados The plan is to sail around the north of the island but winds won’t hold for the day. Before long we’re taking the direct route with the motors running. Chris and Jean on Strikadonia sail north to San Juanico today preparing to cross to San Carlos after biding the Rally goodbye. We’re now four boats after loosing Stray Cat, Stray Katz and now Strikadonia.
Oh did we mention it’s Red Nose Day. Chris is fully into the spirit as you can tell.
Just south of Coronados we ran into a very friendly pod of Pilot Whales. They actually approached the boat and seriously checked us out. We captured it on video and if you listen closely you can hear them talking to each other.
After clearing the channel west of Isla Coronados seas flatten and winds freshened. The plan is to get the boats on a brisk reach and fly the drone to capture a group video. By the time we have the boats together winds are 15 +, too windy to fly the drone so we all sail into the Coronados anchorage.
Thursday night Free Luff hosted dinner. Ryan on Free Luff had some good catch in the La Lancha anchorage and want’s to share his good luck. Another nice Rally evening with plenty of fish and food for all. Mother nature finished the night with a beautiful sunset. Ryan even flew the drone to capture it all. Can’t wait to see his take on the Rally.
Friday May 26th
For the first time the Rally decided to relax in the Coronados anchorage for a second day to have our final beach party in the nice facilities on shore. Everybody enjoyed their relaxing day playing in the water before heading to shore at sunset for the traditional weeny roast. On second thought, Kurt, John, Randy and Jody got up at 5:30 and climbed to the top of the island a very aggressive walk (not so relaxing).

Gato Loco made a run into Loreto today and replenished ice and the liquor cabinet allowing us to host a boat bar after the beach dinner. We finally finished off Murril’s tequila after Kurt had me call Murril for permission to drink it all. Nice way to finish off the evening.
Saturday May 27th
Quiet night in the anchorage but very damp with lots of dew. Within an hour the local bee hive has found our foredeck and we have hundreds of bees sipping fresh water. The good thing is our netting is working great and we have no bees in the cabin. We can now co-exist with the nature of bees
This morning is Ralph and Helen’s Moon Drifter French toast breakfast we look forward to all week long. Ralph’s grill work and Helen’s apple and walnut syrup (Apple delight) are to die for. There’s enough food for an army but we find a way to eat it all.
Saturday afternoon we’re off for our last stop anchoring at the Loreto breakwater marina to enjoy a night in Loreto. We all decided in one final dinner together.
Wow this week went by quickly. It seems like only yesterday we started in Puerto Escondido. It was awesome seeing old friends and meeting new friends on Strikadonia, Free Luff and Stray Katz. It especially nice to share the week with Bob and Chris. Also a big thank you to Kurt for being the motivating force to keep the Rally going for the past 9 years (yes 9th annual). We’re all going to continue enjoying the area over the coming weeks. Mood Drifter will be in the area for at least another month. JollyDogs is heading north to enjoy anchorages between here and Santa Rosalia. Free Luff plans on spending the summer in the Bay of LA area. Gato Loco has good friends Murril & Al and John & Carol joining us for Al’s 50th Bday cruise this coming week before we head north back to Penasco.
That’s a Rally Wrap. It was a awesome time…
Until the next Update
Great Photos, always enjoy your adventures. Happy to see Bob & Chris & the Pilot Whales
