Memorial Weekend in Penasco – Baja 2016 concludes
Arriving home in Puerto Penasco on Saturday evening on Memorial weekend is very interesting. Sunset cruise boats are everywhere including the pirate ship Rey De Mar. The beaches behind the pirate ship are packed. The channel into the harbor is full of pangas pulling tourists inflatables and finally we back into our slip where there are 100s of people unloading and loading on sunset excursion boats. Town is rocking. A phone call to Frankie and Debbie for our ride back to Cholla and we find they have been at our regular “El Capitan” luncheon and are at the Wrecked at the Reef.
Our 90 mile crossing took 14 hours and we’re a bit tired. Leaving at 4 AM turned out to be a good move with good west winds until after sunrise allowing us to sail without motors at 8-9 kts. Mid-day winds turned to our back and lightened so we motor sailed to make Penasco by 6. Overall leg 6 has been an awesome sailing leg with good to strong winds on each day of sailing. The crew was great help and Rob got to expand his sailing experience to a big cat. He hopes to have a cat in his future and I wish him luck with that.
Here’s two videos of the dolphins we ran with south of Bay of LA. The pod was huge and for some reason they decided to run with us. Usually a pod this size with send a few scouts over to check us out but today we were giving an extra special treat all running with us.
Memorial weekend in Penasco is always full of activities. The Cholla Bay Sportsmen Cub fish fry and fishing tournament awards was fun. Crew members Jeffrey and Lynnie received awards along the their capitan Pepe and fishing amiga Kim. The bars and restaurants where full of music making for a very fun weekend. Nice to relax in the HOOD after being at Sea the past 6 weeks and receive a welcome home.
I want to thank all our crews this season for making this season yet another wonderful adventure on the Sea of Cortez. After missing the Seawind Rally last year it was great to get back with our catamaran friends and meet new ones. All in all lots of awesome memories from this years cruise that will put a smile on my face for some time. It’s always an effort to blog but I love being able to look back on year’s of wonderful sailing experiences. It’s bittersweet but this is the last blog for this season.
Until the Next Update
