Baja 08 cruising starts Friday
Let the Baja 08 Cruise begin….. It’s been a long birthday week in Cholla Bay with the libations flowing. Finally Monday Bill and I found time to get back to preparing Gato Loco for her 10 week Baja 08 cruise. Birthday week in Cholla involves celebrating 6 birthdays over 4 days and we’re both moving pretty slow after surviving Tom Sunday (or Tomingo) which includes a bit of that agave nectar fames in Mexico. Gato Loco heads south this Friday morning sometime near sunrise and we’ve got lots of STUFF to do yet. The first leg cruise itinerary is pretty loose with Bill, Dave & Lowell on board for the week long trip to San Carlos.
. . (left) Marina Penasco, where Gato Loco lives while not cruising, is full with private and commercial fishing boats and one other sailboat. It’s a friendly little place that was just purchased by a big marina company that has marinas in La Paz, Cabo and Pureto Villarta. They have big plans including a new finger of docks and facilities which will be great when finished BUT it is Mexico so Mañana is the key word. Speaking of Mañana, our favorite band and sailing crew mates Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers have released a new CD most of which was recorded in Cholla Bay. Mañana is one of many great songs and will probably become our cruise theme song. Here’ a link to a sample of the song.. Mañana Leg 1.. We’ve launched many cruises into Leg 1’s cruising grounds (chart right) but it’s still very easy to find new anchorages to keep the leg fresh. We’re thinking of putting in a long day on day 1 (Friday) to allow us to spend more time in the Bay of LA area on the near by islands (probably Smith), We will also definitely be stopping by the sea side Bay of LA village hoping to see some whale sharks that we’ve seen a couple time before while anchored there. Guillermo’s restaurant has a great boat ramp for landing with good food and margaritas as well. It’s always a great place to meet interesting mariners. Last time there was a 3 man crew that had navigated their 24ft small fishing boat from San Diego around the cape. Not sure if that is interesting or crazy but definitely adventurous!! The SW corner of isla Tiburon will be another stop. We anchored there last cruise with Brian & Heather arriving late and leaving early the next day leaving no time for sightseeing. We need to arrive in San Carlos by Friday April 18 to take advantage of a friends offer to fly us back to Penasco in a small 4 seater plane. Having sailed the area, it will be interesting to fly fairly low to see things from the air. The cruise takes a short time-out to return to Penasco and to Cholla Bay for two close friends wedding (Guy & Melissa) held in our Cholla neighborhood April 26th. This will be a huge event not to be missed and we won’t. Leg 2 will begin shortly after… Bill will be heading back to San Carlos on Monday April 28th and Frankie, Neely and I will be driving our RV Pee Wee both heading for Loreto, Baja meeting up Saturday May 3rd. There should be lots of stories coming as we cruise through the eight legs of Baja 08... BTW Bill is still looking for crew members for leg 2 Leg 1 April 11-19, Crew: Lowell, Bill, Dave – Puerto Penasco to San Carlos . .
