San Carlos to Puerto Penasco June 15 - 22 2005

Saturday June 18

Each crossing of the Sea of Cortez has it's own personality. This trip, Sea sprites were good to us as well were the fishing Gods. We were sailing at 7-8kts by 8:30 and we caught (and released) 10 fish. On the sailing side we crossed in 12 hours (88km @ 7kts average). Winds built to 20 until 2ish and then began to lighten. We made the most of it with the spinnaker only motoring the last few hours. We arrive at the north slot of Isla Salsipuedes 7ish with some day light to do some exploring.

Salsipuedes was 2 islands at one time but gravel spit connects them as one creating a great anchorage for all conditions.

Back to the fish story... It started with two barracudas, then we got into a school of tuna and as fast as the lure went back into the water zing... went the rod. At one time Walt had two tuna on at one time, one on each treble hook. That was a huge fight until one broke free. All total, 2 Barricuda, 3 darodo & 5 tuna plus all those that got away (Bill says pinch me). We kept the first baricuda for diner releasing the rest. Over diner we commented how stupid we were when we could of been eating Mahi steaks for diner, Although the basted barracuda was good.

Heather, Can you forward emails to Anita. We forget to add her.

Previous Update Next Update

This pelican was thinking about stealing one of our fish.

Cool breeze all night so another comfortable night sleeping. A little exploring this morning and then off to Bahia de Los Angeles (Bay of LA) 9ish. Just 38kms to sail today so we will have an easy one.

Until the next update… The Gato Loco Crew
