San Carlos to Puerto Penasco June 15 - 22 2005

Solving the Battery problem turned into an adventure in to Guaymas. Jesus (manager of Marina Seca) gave me a ride to down town Guaymas picking up a new battery and then we were off to the industrial marina area. He pointed out where the new government sponsored 400 slip marina area will be. Work has already begun and will be done in 5-10 years. He was heading to drop an invoice for restoration supplies to a 150' motor yacht being repainted. Saw 4 British crew on board working with local labors. I was craving for my camera as it was an old industrial area with old old shrimpers on old docks. The pictures I could of had!! Right behind this yacht was a ferry being repainted. They had both front and back open and I could see straight though (probably 75 yards).

Back to Marina San Carlos to finish prep for departure. Recharging 2 batteries with one fresh one and power looks good. It's pretty hot and we want to get going. Finally at 3 PM we pull away from the fuel docks. Like usual it's always a push to get the hell out of port. Let the sailing adventure begin...

Tetas de Cabra distinctive peaks as we leave. Humid (85%) and damp. Winds light from the west so we're motoring to make as much progress up the coast. 20 miles north and the boys hook a 20lb Skipjack. Good fight but it's slowing our progress north. After reviewing charts our furtherest northern anchorage with south wind protection is Los Japoneses where there a fishing community and a cannery in the past. We watched the sunset with our destination still to be fetched. Finally arrived 8:30 with enough light to find the anchorage. The village is light up with street lights and fishing pongas are arriving later as we have diner. Huge estuary just north is probably good fishing. The location is very close to the CHRTS2 on the map.

Wind picked up just as we arrived at Japoneses and blew most of the night. Anchorage offered great protection from the south with a little slot that let good breeze thru making good sleeping.

Alarm was set from Bill's last trip and it woke us up at 6 AM. Los Japoneses as we way anchor. Made way by 6:40 (after cob webs cleared). Swells (2') running from the south as we exit anchorage. Wind blew all night but calm now. 8AM sails up, 8:30 motors off and making 7.5 kts in 12 kts of wind off our back port quarter. This new bottom on the boat is fast. BAM!! Walt has a small barracuda on the line (diner).

Winds continue to build from the SSE and seas are growing as we head out for the crossing. AT THE MOMENT it seems like it will be a good crossing.

Millions of jellyfish as we cross. Their about 12".. We've reeled in 4 fish this morning. The boys arms are getting sore!
