Cruise starts tomorrow
Cruisin to San Carlos
Sunday April 15, Cholla Bay Mexico (near Puerto Penasco)
It’s time to start our Baja 07 cruise to Loreto Fest, an annual sailing party in Puerto Escondido just south of Loreto, Baja. Gato Loco heads out tomorrow (Monday April 16th) on the first leg of this 400 mile journey south. Gato Loco partners Bill Hensler and Dave Redden will sail the first leg to San Carlos over the next 10 days. Bill says they want to spend some time at Isla San Louis, Puerto Refugio and have a killer margarita at Guillermo’s in Bahia de Los Angeles. We will have to see where they go after leaving Bay of LA. Their plans are open as they head further south.
Tomorrow will be a big day as they do the long leg to escape from Puerto Penasco’s far north location in the Sea of Cortez. If they head directly to Isla San Louise it will be 90 miles and averaging 7 kts they are looking at least a 13 hour crossing. There’s also an option to make land fall at Puertecitos 13 miles closer. Weather conditions have been great for this crossing over the past week with strong winds out of the SSE up to 25kts. Today we had strong north winds kicking the waves up but things have settled down later this afternoon. Winds will probably back down tomorrow but let’s hope not too much.
Today, Frankie and I worked with Bill to finish readying Gato Loco. Dave will arrive later tonight from Phoenix so they can be ready for a very early departure tomorrow morning.
Bill will try his hand at sending email updates as they make their way south. He will be using his new cell phone when he finds service. The northern Sea of Cortez is still thin on service so we may not hear from him until he makes it south of Bay of LA. The Bay of LA area still runs on a community generator that shuts down at 10PM and there was no cell service there the last time we visited. You never now things might of changed in the past year…
As you can see updates are being posted on the new GatoLoco Update blog. When a new update is posted an email notification will be sent to everybody on our BajaAmigo mail list. You can be added to the list by following the subscribe link below. You can now browse through the updates easily with the new format which should be an improvement from only receiving them in an email. What do you think?
We’re excited to be back on the water and hope everybody enjoys our window to the Sea of Cortez. Don’t hesitate to send us a short email. Frankie and I can’t wait to get on the boat April 26th.! Enjoy Bill & Dave’s leg to San Carlos..
Until the next update…. Lowell for The Gato Loco Crew.
