Hiking in Meteora
Brian, Heather & Bill’s trip to the Meteora Monastary By Heather
.After hearing that Athens was one of the most dangerous places in Europe to rent a car, Bill, Brian, and Heather decided to go ahead and rent a very fine, little, tiny car to carry us North to Meteora. Meteora is surrounded by incredible rock cliffs that host monastaries from the 14th century. Brian and Heather have a friend that lives in the area and after a wonderful dinner of local lamb, sausages, and wine that Johanny provided for us, in the morning we hiked up 3,000 feet to the oldest monastary in Greece. There are priests that inhabit the monastaries and it is respectful for outsiders to cover legs and shoulders. This monastary was featured in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. The views were uncomparable and combined with the history and the geology, we were definitely humbled. The monastaries of Meteora in one word were breathtaking! Not to mention that the drive from Athens occured without incident!!!
.The views from the hotel were beautiful. The rocks and the town of Kalambaka were pristine and the towns peaple proud of their history and their future. Our friend Johnny was kind enough to show us around his home town and tell us all the local places to go. It really makes a difference getting in on the local leve!!!
....Janny, Heather, and Brian enoying the fabulous food at a friend of Jannis. Thanks Bill for taking picture! Thank goodness for all the hiking so that we could burn off all the GREAT food and Ouzo. Jannis family has vineyards and he brought us Tspipuro, which is basically moonshine, a homemade version of Ouzo. Hmmmm, just the comination we needed!
.All in all, definitely worth the death defying 4 hour drive from Athens.
