Rocky Mountain National Park

RMNP-pan1

IMG 8915aI’m writing this from our home in Phoenix after arriving yesterday (Monday) morning, driving down from Flagstaff. Wow what a trip.!!

Our last update was sent from National Park Retreats RV park at the entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park Co. We made our way through the park last Thursday. The park road is the highest passage through a mountain range in the US with an elevation over 12000 ft. We had weather chasing us all the way with light snow and a mid-day temp of 46 degrees. I moved quickly to get these photos. The road will probably only be open for a couple more weeks. Driving south from the park we crossed the Continental Divide at 10,759 ft but I’m sure we crossed it earlier at the summit but it was too IMG 8924cold to pose for a photo. Our destination for the day was Gunnison which turned out to be a long distance with the three slow mountain passes to go over. Lots of ski resorts along the way. Winter Park below, we also passed Copper Mountain and Breckenridge.IMG 8935a

We almost stopped for the night at Leadville where a film festival was going on. Looks like an interesting old mining town that we will put on our place to visit again. The picture below was taking on Main street as we drove through. After a long day of mountain driving we arrive in Gunnison 6ish, a tough 300 mile day.IMG 8938a

Gunnison sets in high plains surrounded by mountains, ranches and farms. We had great dinner at the Gunisack restaurant in downtown.

Friday…The photo below was taken approaching Ouray from Gunnison.IMG 8951a The road quickly climbs back in the mountains at Ouray on the million dollar HW. The HW name comes from the value of gold ore that was lost per mile when they blasted the road through the pass. Value today??

Lots of road work wrapping up for the summer. Good opportunity for some road side photos..

Friday our destination was Dave and Brenda’s home south for Durango Co. We stopped here on our way eastward and had a great time and were happy to be invited to stop westbound. Friday night we had this big fire while listening to great music. Weather is cooling to the high 40s at night and the fire feels good. Dave had tempted me to go trail riding IMG 8986aon our eastward stop but with 6 weeks of vacation in front of us I thought it would be wise to notIMG 5378a take any chances. Now almost home I’m ready. We had a exciting ride on a single track trail above Durango. Dave choose a trail to let me get my bike legs back but it quickly got a little technical keeping me on my toes.

Sunday we headed for Flagstaff to visit Carlton and Beth who were with us in Athens and sailing the islands. They live and work in Flagstaff and have a home in Cholla Bay like us. It’s going to be our last day in the mountains and great to spend it with Cholla friends. Lots of stories to catch up on and memories to reminisce about. They came home with lots of souvenirs since they were flying directly from IMG 9003Greece to Phoenix.

GatoLoco co-owner Dave Redden was in Flag working on his summer home so we went by to check out his progress. He’s building a 2 story 3 bedroom log home doing as much work himself as possible. Pictured here is Dave, Beth, Carlton and Frankie>>

We were treated to Beth’s famous cooking with a Greek lamb chop dinner. What a special way to spend our last day on the road. They even came back from Greece with some of Captain George’s olive oil for our salads. Thanks for a great evening.

I’m not sure how to end this cruise. It seems so long ago when we started, even longer from the planning stages. Everybody had a great time and of course Al had her 40th birthday cruise. Frankie and I, like everybody on the cruise can only hope she wants to do it again soon. We’ve taken lots of pictures to capture the memories and I will be working to get some slideshows put together to share the memories.

It is nice to be home but we will not get much rest with Big Fun in Cholla Bay coming Oct 14th – 28th

Stay tuned for the next adventure… Until the next update..

In the Colorado Mountains

September 6th, 2007

Hello from the Rocky Mountain National Park just above Estes Park Colorado. IMG 8824

We’ve been on the move since the last update. We arrived in Denver at my cousin Jamie and Jeff’s mid afternoon last Sunday with clouds and finally rain near sunset allowing us to soak up some cold weather as we make our way towards what seems like inferno Phoenix weather in the coming week. Jamie and Jeff were gracious to allow us to park in their driveway for two nights. Having never meet Jeff, it was great to spend time with both of them. They have a lush home SE of down town near the University of Denver with a great back yard for entertaining. Neely really liked it. They gave us a tour of the neighborhood hitting local restaurants along the way. IMG 8812Labor Day marked our first serious exercise in over a month when we hiked Windy SaddleIMG 8832Park west of Denver. The biking and hiking trails were busy with the cloudy weather making it a good day for hiking. An excellent dinner under the stars later in the day with another cousin Jack B joining us.

Tuesday we cruised north to Fort Collins for lunch and then back to LovelandIMG 8852 where our youngest nephew Nick lives. We found a great RV park up Big Thompson canyon towards Estes to stay the night. Later we went in to Loveland and had dinner with Nick and then over to his Mom’s Kelly and Sonny.

<Sonny, Kelly & Nick

Riverview RV park turned out to be very nice with our campsite right on the river. Camp came complete with squirrels tIMG 8857o entertain Neely and Frankie. Traffic is way down after Labor Day, Riverview was only 30% full. Nice change.

.

.

.

Today we motored up Big Thompson Canyon to Estes Park for lunch and some shopping. The falls pictureIMG 8862was taken on the drive up. Some areas are narrow canyons which had aIMG 8869a huge flash flood about 30 years ago. Everything has been redeveloped since.

Estes Park sets lake side with a big shopping area and this cool old theater on the small river that flows through the downtown area.

This afternoon we landed in a campground near the entrance to the park. In the picture below the poleIMG 8872a fence is the park boundary making it easy to take a walk in the park. Cold and raining as we call it a night.

Thursday morning… Rain again this morning and low of 50. We’re off to drive over the pass in the Rocky Mountain Park and then down to Gunnison IMG 8880for our over night stay. I think the cold weather is here to stay. Maybe heading south will keep us a little warmer. We continue soaking the cold weather. Hope it helps…

Until the next Update

West Bound (a family update)

September 1st, 2007

Heading for Denver Co. (A family update)

IMG 8703

First order of business, returning to Gallatin, was to spend time with our Golden Neely after leaving her with my mother for 3 weeks. She was extremely happy to be reunited. While we were gone she also had fun hanging out with the neighbor dog Jake. Frankie loves setting on Mom’s patio reading and playing with Neely and Jake. I will have to check when we head west to make sure that Frankie hasn’t snuck Jake into the motor home somewhere.

Weather in Missouri has been very pleasant and even cool at night. One evening we visited cousins Phyllis and Rex who live on Lake Viking near Gallatin. A sunset cruise on the lake brought out the jackets and blankets.IMG 8657

We drove to Omaha to make a delivery to cousin Scott and family. We hadn’t seen them since their family had grown from 4 to 6. We had a great time with them all.!

IMG 8677Eating very well in Greece and Italy has taken it’s toll so we’ve tried to do some exercising, However the eating well continues here. I guess the starvation will have to wait until we get back to Phx. Time here has been pretty busy. My cousin JD needed a web site design updated in 4 days so I took on that challenge. Check out the result www.goshowmeenergy.com. Work continues on it and everybody seems pleased. It’s an interesting alternative energy company.

IMG 8678I have an aunt moving and Frankie scored these ears that brought back some IMG 8721smlinteresting memories in front of the TV. Speaking of funny hats we made our usual visit to the Amish community nearby and I always have to try on one of their hats.. Here’s some other pictures from the visit.IMG 8730

IMG 8762IMG 8770My cousin Katharine IMG 8769& Kevin arrived from the Chicago area by Amtrack train to an interesting old train station in Osceola Iowa. With all the airport delays it’s makes trains a good alternative. They arrived 10 min before the train departed and had a relaxing ride through the country side. Sounds like fun, Frankie and I will have to do that someday.

IMG 8776IMG 8783Before heading west we had another excellent dinner at the Season’s restaurant in Gallatin with Mom and 3 of her sisters. Gallatin’s courthouse square across the street. A very fitting way to wrap up the family visit.

I’m writing this setting in Phillipsburg Kansas about half way between Gallatin and Denver on HW36. We took this smaller highway today on the northern border of Kansas to stay in the green farm country. Couldn’t resist stopping and taking pictures in a huge sunflower field in full bloom.

Tomorrow (Sunday) we will drive into Denver to spend Labor Day with my cousin Jamie and Jeff who live in a historic area in the city. We’ve never been to their home so we are both looking forward to it.

If it sounds like we’ve seen a lot of my cousins, we have, and enjoyed it very much.

Until the next update.
